Superheroes

So, with the radiation from Japan leaking into the air and all this conversation about Nuclear Reactors/plants in the news, I've been thinking. Are true superheroes in our future?
Now I'm not thinking Superman or Spiderman yet, but is a Batman coming our way? With the way things are going the rich seem to be continuing to get richer while the poor get poorer and with the Parkour craze coming about, the Real-life Superheroes movement and all the civil unrest in the middle east that seems to be spreading throughout the world(think Wisconsin again) Sin City doesn't seem to be all that unrealistic.
Or maybe the radioactive rain will give us something to talk about. I'm thinking a tall, lanky Hulk. (haha) Or a Professor X. That would be cool. Perhaps Nature's way of getting back will be to evolve a few hundred humans into "mutants" like the X-Men. Any opinions?

  1. it would have to be a team of heroes, and even then i doubt theyd be able to influence the world that much, in terms of business/financial aspects. sure, crime would likely go down, maybe even war would become a thing of the past. this comment is heavily influenced by Watchmen, btw lol. but there would be conflicts arising from which "side" these heroes are on, who benefits from their actions the most, who gets to decide what problems are the essential ones, etc. if you want to say "keep the sides out of it", then it comes down to these heroes personal biases - granted, if they are superheroes they may not even have bias (a superpower in its own right).

that would mean the heroes would have to act independently from any organized government (until a government is formed with these heroes as the centerpiece). then the heroes would be vigilantes like batman.

all the world really needs is a tangible "God", much like dr manhattan, who says "fuck the world up and i will blink you out of existence". now that statement could start a whole discussion about religion and how it tries to make that same point - "fuck the world up and i will blink you out of existence" - but the problem is that we dont have any visual or tangible evidence that this would be the case. we have to take it on faith and the bible

  2. Nice. Ok, I actually wasn't thinking of Watchmen when I wrote this but you brought up a good point and I agree. We do need a Dr. Manhattan.
